How to Block Phone Distractions When Studying or Working on iPhone

Notification pings and social app temptations cost the average person over an hour of deep work per day. The most effective method is not willpower — it's physically removing access to the tempting apps during focused sessions.

Step by step

  1. List the apps you check out of habit

Social media, news, messaging apps. Be honest. You need to block all of them to make the session work.

  2. Set a focus session in LockHour Pro

Choose a session length — 25 minutes (Pomodoro), 45 minutes, or a custom duration. Select the apps to block.

  3. Start the session and put your phone face-down

LockHour blocks access to the selected apps for the duration. You can still take calls and use essential tools.

  4. Take a real break at the end

Walk away from your desk, stretch, or get water. Do not open social apps during the break unless the session has fully ended.

Frequently asked questions

Can I override the block in an emergency?

LockHour Pro offers a configurable emergency exit. You decide before the session whether to allow breaks — this is intentional, so you are not locked out of your phone in a genuine emergency.

Does it work with Screen Time?

LockHour Pro uses its own focus session mechanism. Apple's Screen Time and LockHour Pro can both be active, but LockHour is designed to be easier to trigger for a specific session without navigating into Settings.

What about calls?

Phone calls are not blocked. Only the selected apps are affected during the focus session.
